Bisquick Sausage Balls

Bisquick sausage balls are a Southern party classic; savory, cheesy, and so simple to prep. Whether you’re hosting a game day party or a holiday brunch, this bite-sized finger food comes together fast and delivers an appetizer that will just get gobbled up!

No matter if it’s a big neighborhood football party or a casual game night with friends, you don’t need to spend hours in the kitchen. This sausage ball recipe mixes, rolls, and bakes in no time. It’s also easy to tweak by changing up the meat or cheese.

I typically use Bisquick baking mix for these, but I’ve also tested them with Jiffy and they turn out just as good. I have learned that Bisquick tends to hold its shape better during baking and gives the balls a fluffier texture, while Jiffy turns out a bit softer, which some people prefer.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb Jimmy Dean ground sausage
  • 1/4 cup finely diced onion
  • 1/4 cup finely diced celery
  • 2 cups baking mix (Bisquick preferred, Jiffy also works)
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 cups freshly shredded cheddar cheese

In a large mixing bowl, combine sausage, onion, celery, baking mix, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and cheddar cheese. Use your hands to knead the mixture well. If some baking mix is left at the bottom, that’s normal. Just keep working it together until fully combined

Place on a baking sheet in a single layer, spacing each ball about 1/2 inch apart.

If you’re into creamier sausage balls with a little kick, try my Rotel Cream Cheese Sausage Balls. They’re made without Bisquick and are always a hit.

How to Store Leftover Bisquick Sausage Balls Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2–3 days. Reheat in the microwave until warmed through.

Can You Freeze Sausage Balls? Yes. Prepare and roll them into balls, then freeze on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Once frozen, transfer to a freezer bag or container. Freezing them spaced out first prevents sticking, which makes reheating smoother later on. When ready to cook, defrost in the fridge overnight and bake as usual, adding a few minutes to the bake time if needed.

Turn Sausage Balls into Breakfast Balls Swap in pork breakfast sausage for a breakfast-style version. These pair great with scrambled eggs or as a side to a cheesy breakfast casserole. Italian sausage also works well for a more savory variation.

Tips for Perfect Sausage Balls

  • You can substitute ground turkey, chicken, or beef if preferred. I usually use Jimmy Dean regular sausage for these. They’ve got a consistent texture and spice level that works perfectly.
  • Some people add milk for moisture, but a good mix usually does the trick. Just keep going and you’ll get there.
  • Avoid adding too much baking mix or the texture may become dry and crumbly.
  • Dipping sauces that pair well include honey mustard, BBQ sauce, ranch, or for a holiday idea, cranberry.
