Old Fashioned Fruit Salad

Summer is upon us, and the time for fresh summer fruit salad side dishes is finally here! Sweet, delicious, and oh-so-easy, this old-fashioned fruit salad made with sliced fresh fruits and canned cherry pie filling is just like my grandma used to make me during summer break.

With the sweet cherry glaze enveloping all the combined ingredients, you have no idea how this 10-minute fruit salad had me screaming, “More, please!” As a side note, my dad always said I would return from my grandma’s 10 pounds heavier, so take that as you will, ha!

  • If you grab more than one can of cherry pie filling, here are canned fruit recipes that you can whip up with it.

Can I use another pie-filling flavor? I haven’t, but it would be worth trying! There are many flavor options, such as blueberry pie filling, Strawberry Pie Filling, and Apple Pie filling, that would all be worth testing and give a new take on an old-fashioned classic.

How to make Old Fashioned Fruit Salad

I really hope you love this recipe! Aside from washing and slicing the fruit, this is a dump-and-go recipe that is great when you need a last-minute sweet side dish to take to an event.

Feel free to adjust the types of fruits to include what you personally love.

  1. Combine the sliced strawberries, grapes, kiwi, and bananas in a large bowl.
  2. Gently stir in the cherry pie filling until all the fruit is evenly coated.
  3. Cover the bowl and refrigerate until ready to serve, or you can serve it immediately.

How long will this Old Fashioned Cherry Pie Salad keep?

Leftovers should be kept in an airtight container for a few days, but remember that fresh fruits tend to hold a lot of moisture and can get soft and ripen quickly.

No matter the fruit salad recipe you use, nothing beats same-day freshness. Thankfully, this recipe is so quick that there is no need to make it ahead.

Easy tip to keep it cold

If you can plan ahead, store the canned pie filling and mixing bowl in the fridge until you make the salad so that it starts out cold.
