Mummy Hot Dogs are the perfect Halloween appetizer. So adorably cute and perfectly delicious, these mummy dogs are just the finger food you serve before trick-or-treating.
This hot dog mummy is so easy to make! It’s quite simple, with only 3 ingredients, and very little prep for a big foodie reward. These are especially fun at Halloween time and are delightful right before the big Trick or Treat night.

Why you will love these Halloween Hot Dogs
Holiday friendly: These mummy hot dogs are a fun main meal or appetizer and are a perfect holiday meal (and right before these Melting Snowman Chocolate Balls are charming!) any night in October. What a super fun way to bring in the season!
Make-ahead– Everyone knows that trick-or-treating can be one of the busiest nights with the most scrambling. Prep ahead by wrapping these dogs and placing them in the fridge. As long as the dough isn’t exposed to any heat, they are fine to pop in the oven and be ready to cook.
They really are cute: There is something about cute food! We adore making things like this in our house and think you will love how they turn out as well.
INGREDIENTS
- hot dogs – full size give you the best placement for lots of interesting dough patterns. You can use smaller mini hot dogs, turkey dogs or sausage links, but will need to adjust the pieces of dough accordingly.
- Pillsbury crescent rolls – the easiest way to wrap dough is to use refrigerated crescent rolls. However refrigerated or homemade pizza dough and in some cases, flaky ready-made dough is fine as well.
- mustard for the eyes – little dots of mustard or even mini candy eye balls work great. The dogs with mustard taste better than candy eyes, but that choice is up to you. Kids usually do not mind eating off those bits of candy and they do look super cute. Alternatively, dots of ketchup also work great and give the mummy dogs red zombie eyes.

Recipe Variations and Expert Tips
- The trick for the best hot dog mummy will be to cut small/thin strips of crescent dough and to pull it so it’s stretched out and even thinner. Otherwise, it’s a bread item and will puff up.
- I used 2 crescent rolls for 4 hot dogs, so the entire package of crescent roll dough would typically need 16 hot dogs..
- Acount for 10-15 minutes to cut, roll and assemble all of those Halloween dogs.
- If you don’t have a pastry cutter as shown you can use a pizza cutter or kitchen scissors to creat thin strips.
How to Assemble Hot Dog Mummies
- Preheat the oven to 375 and line a baking pan sheet with parchment paper. There is no need to spray cooking spray on the parchment. Using a paper towel, dry hot dogs if wet or contain any moisture from packaging.
- Use a pastry cutter pizza cutter to cut each crescent triangle into thin dough strips.
- Pull and stretch the strips of dough before wrapping them around each hot dog in a mummy pattern. As noted under the mummy dog tips section, cutting the strips and stretching them out well allows the mummy wraps portion to stay FLAT on the dogs rather than puffing up like a roll.
- Do your best to keep the seams of the dough on the back of the dog and tuck any loose dough under the back/bottom of the hot dog. Leave a small opening in wrapping for eyes. Bake on cookie sheet for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown.

- Let mummy dogs cool before using a toothpick dipped into mustard to add eyes (or ketchup for red eyes!). Are these not the CUTEST Halloween appetizers EVER!!

What kind of dipping sauce to serve
If sticking with a Halloween-themed dinner or appetizer, squirt extra ketchup on a plate and design a spider web sauce by using mustard as the web.
Other sauces are homemade ranch dip, copycat Cane’s sauce, cheese sauce, or copycat chick-fil-a sauce.
Can a mummy hot dog be Keto?
Great news! Hot dogs ARE keto. The bad news? The dough isn’t. However, by slicing and using MOZZARELLA STICKS laid directly on top of a dog and melted for just a few moments, you can create a Keto dog mummy. Just do not wrap the cheese AROUND the dog as it will melt under. Simply lay across it and just melt via microwave, 30 seconds a time to avoid cheese spread.
