Crock Pot Grits

Grits have never been easier! Slow cook your grits (on high, low or overnight!) for a classic bowl of savory grits just begging for cheese, butter and bacon. Even if you have never made grits before, this one recipe for you!

Nothing says breakfast like a pile of easy eggs, crispy bacon, cheesy hash browns, and a bowl of grits.

This grits recipe and all the ingredients are a simple classic recipe. As you can see, there are no special ingredient additions that you make to start (those come at the end) and are a fresh homemade grit that is just waiting for the cheese!

You can absolutely eat grits plain the way they make or get really fancy with all the “fixin’s.”

Creamy Crock Pot Grits Ingredients

Slow cooker grits are a great way to make sure you get a creamy, butter and filling grit that can feed a hungry breakfast crowd. If you have been scared of cooking grits and messing it up (after all, Southerners can be super defensive of this dish!), this recipe is for you.

As a side note, be sure not to subsitute Instant grits in this recipe. Once verified all ingredients are on hand, there is a printable recipe and tips below.

  • dry Stone-Ground Grits (not instant grits) or Regular Grits
  • 1 stick butter
  • 6 cups of water
  • salt

Crock Pot Grits { Overnight or 4 hrs}

Adding grits to the slow cooker will produce delicious, creamy, and tender grits perfect to add cheese and butter too. This is a no fuss recipe that is truly the easiest- easier than instant pot grits, Ninja Foodi grits, stove top – truly dump them and just wait!

  1. Crockpot Grits Cook in just four hours: Add stone ground grits, salt, melted butter and water to slow cooker. Place lid on top and set on HIGH for 4 hours, stirring occasionally.
  2. Overnight Grits Cook in 8 hours : This doesn’t necessarily work for you if you go to bed super early. Add all ingredients in slow cooker on LOW for 8 hours.
  • If making grits ahead and you go to bed at 10 pm, slow cooked grits will be ready at 6 am.
  • If grits go into cooker at 11, these buttery southern grits will be ready at 7 am to make morning easier.

What can I add to Grits?

There is more than one way to serve this Southern side dish! Cheese is an absolute must. From adding and stirring in *until melted* cheddar, or my favorite, Gruyere, you can really bring these grits to another level.

Try adding in:

  • Pats of butter
  • Slices of green onions
  • Top with bits of cooked bacon
  • Crock Pot Cheese Grits – Shredded Cheese should be stirred in right before you serve
  • Bits of Ham
  • Cheesy Shrimp and Grits
  • Favorite seasonings like Cajun seasoning or Tabasco
  • Prefer to have sweet grits? Try brown sugar and butter.
