Choosing the Best Apples for Baking

The success of any baked apple recipe often hinges on the type of apple you choose. For these Caramel Stuffed Baked Apples, you want an apple that will hold its shape well during baking without becoming mushy, while still softening enough to be easily enjoyed. Here are some of the best varieties and why they work:

  • Honeycrisp: My personal favorite, as noted in the recipe. Honeycrisp apples offer a delightful balance of sweetness and tartness, and their crisp texture holds up beautifully when baked, providing a satisfying bite alongside the gooey caramel.
  • Granny Smith: If you prefer a tarter profile to cut through the sweetness of the caramel and brown sugar, Granny Smith apples are an excellent choice. They are firm and retain their shape perfectly.
  • Fuji: Known for their sweetness and firm flesh, Fuji apples bake well and offer a lovely, mild flavor.
  • Braeburn: These apples have a complex sweet-tart flavor and a firm texture, making them ideal for baking.
  • Gala: While slightly softer than Honeycrisp, Gala apples still work well if you prefer a sweeter, milder flavor.

No matter which apple you select, ensure they are medium-sized and relatively uniform to ensure even baking and perfect portion control for your delightful caramel surprise.

Caramel Stuffed Baked Apples with a Brown Sugar Topping: Expert Tips & Tricks

Achieving perfectly baked apples with a molten caramel center is simpler than you might think, especially with a few key tips:

  • Hollowing Out the Apples: The trick to a perfectly contained caramel center is how you core the apples. A melon scoop or a sturdy spoon works wonders for carefully hollowing out the core. The crucial part is to not core the apples entirely through to the bottom. Leaving the bottom intact creates a natural “bowl” for the caramels, preventing them from leaking out and creating a sticky mess in your baking dish. You want to remove the seeds and a good portion of the fibrous core, but maintain that sealed base.
  • Caramel Quantity: The number of caramels you can fit will depend on the size of your apples. For medium-sized apples, two unwrapped caramels usually fit perfectly, creating a substantial gooey center. If you’re using larger apples, you might be able to comfortably fit three or even four caramels. Adjust the amount based on your preference for how caramel-y you want each bite to be. More caramel means more delicious ooey-gooey goodness!
  • Easy Cleanup: Baking can sometimes lead to sticky situations, especially with melting caramel. To make cleanup an absolute breeze, always suggest foil-lining your baking dish. This simple step will save you time and effort scrubbing later on.
  • Optional (But Highly Recommended!) Drizzles: While these baked apples are phenomenal on their own, a drizzle of extra sauce can take them over the top. Consider a classic caramel sauce for an extra layer of sweetness, or try something a little different like an Easy Pecan Praline Sauce for added nutty depth. These extra touches will make your dessert even more decadent and visually appealing. Who could resist?

Ingredients

Apples

  • 4 medium apples (any kind; I used Honeycrisp)
  • 8 unwrapped caramels
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Topping

  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/3 tsp cinnamon
  • 4 Tbsp butter, chilled

Optional

  • Caramel Sauce
  • Easy Pecan Praline Sauce (linked below)
  • Homemade Whipped Cream (linked below)

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line an 8×8 inch baking pan with aluminum foil for easier cleanup.
  • In a small mixing bowl, combine the rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, and 1/3 tsp cinnamon. Add the chilled butter and cut it in with a fork or pastry cutter until the mixture is crumbly, resembling coarse crumbs. Set this topping aside.
  • Carefully cut off the very top of each apple, creating a stable base for stuffing.
  • Using a melon scoop or a spoon, gently scoop out the core of each apple. Be sure to remove all seeds, but leave the bottom of the apple intact so that you form a natural “bowl” to hold the caramel.
  • Place two unwrapped caramels into the hollowed center of each apple. Sprinkle the remaining 1/4 tsp of cinnamon evenly over the caramels in each apple (about 1/4 tsp per apple).
  • Generously sprinkle the prepared oat brown sugar crumb topping over the top of each stuffed apple.
  • Place the apples in the foil-lined baking pan and bake for approximately 20-25 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork and the topping is golden brown and caramelized.
  • For an extra touch of indulgence, top with a dollop of whipped cream, a drizzle of caramel sauce, or a decadent pecan praline sauce.
  • Serve your Caramel Stuffed Baked Apples immediately while warm, and enjoy every gooey bite!

Serving Suggestions for the Ultimate Indulgence

Once your Caramel Stuffed Baked Apples emerge from the oven, fragrant and bubbling, they are ready to be transformed into an unforgettable dessert experience. While delicious on their own, here are a few serving suggestions to truly elevate this fall treat:

  • Vanilla Bean Ice Cream: A scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream melting into the warm apple and gooey caramel is a classic pairing that never disappoints. The cold ice cream provides a delightful contrast to the warm fruit.
  • Homemade Whipped Cream: Light, airy, and delicately sweet, a generous dollop of homemade whipped cream adds a cloud-like texture and balances the richness of the caramel.
  • Extra Caramel Drizzle: For the ultimate caramel lover, a warm drizzle of store-bought or homemade caramel sauce over the top adds an extra layer of decadence.
  • Toasted Nuts: A sprinkle of toasted pecans, walnuts, or almonds adds a lovely crunch and a nutty flavor that complements both apples and caramel beautifully.
  • A Dash of Sea Salt: A tiny pinch of flaky sea salt sprinkled over the caramel before serving can enhance all the flavors, offering that popular sweet-and-salty combination.

These baked apples are fantastic for a holiday breakfast, a comforting afternoon snack, or as the grand finale to any meal. Their inviting aroma and irresistible taste make them a crowd-pleaser for any occasion.
